If you ever run into a situation where you are getting Unknown Command errors in your command line when using the Powerpack for Advance Steel commands (example below), here is how to troubleshoot.
Command: _GRTCStartLicUtil Unknown command “GRTCSTARTLICUTIL”. Press F1 for help.
First, you can check if the issue is with your base Advance Steel install. An easy way to tell is by running the Export to Navisworks command under the Export & Import tab:
If the command works fine, your Advance Steel install is good – skip to the Powerpack installation portion of this post.
If you are also getting the same “Unknown command” error when using the Export to Navisworks command, you will need to uninstall and reinstall Advance Steel. After you uninstall Advance Steel, you can try running the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter tool to see if you need to clear out any registry keys your year version of Advance Steel may have left behind.
You can find the tool download here.
Click on Download troubleshooter to download the tool >> run the tool and hit Next >> select Uninstalling >> if you see anything that says Advance Steel 20xx (where 20xx is the year version of Advance Steel you just uninstalled), select the line item and then hit Next. The troubleshooter will try to remove registry key (usually successful). If you see multiple line items related to your year version of Advance Steel, you’ll need to run the troubleshooter again to remove more line items.
Once Advance Steel is uninstalled, you can download and reinstall Advance Steel. When you download Advance Steel from your Autodesk Account, please try using the Browser Download method (select View all if you do not see it as the default option).
You will need to disable your antivirus and popup blocker before downloading (it should download two files). Once both files are downloaded, run one of the parts to extract both files (accept the default locations during the installation).
Now, you are ready to reinstall the Powerpack for Advance Steel. Before running the Powerpack installer, be sure to check your USA folder properties (default location for USA folder: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance Steel 20xx). Select the USA folder >> right click and select Properties). Under the Security tab, see if the user Everyone is in the list. If not, add Everyone to the list with full access permissions. Once that it in place, try reinstalling the Powerpack and then see if you are able to properly use the Powerpack commands.
