Advance Design 2020 What’s New: Part 1

With the latest release of Graitec’s Advance Design structural analysis software having just arrived I thought this would be a great opportunity to showcase some of the latest features in Advance Design. Being a major release, AD2020 hosts a tonne of new features so I have chosen to focus on a few in this blog, keeping with features that would be of particular interest to those in the structural steel industry.

First off, our 3D Climatic Generator has been beefed up to now go beyond Eurocodes recommendations. You can now automatically generate wind loading for buildings with horizontal setbacks, capturing pressure differentiations due to edge effects.

This is based on the recommendations by CNC2M College of Experts to complement EN1991-1-4. CNC2M also covers awnings and buildings with protruding roofs, another pitfall of the EN1991-1-4 guidelines. These are now covered in Advance Design and as always can be applied in a matter of seconds.

The definition of Load Areas has received some handy new features also. That being Load Area on Selection and Load Area by Extrusion. Load Area by Extrusion is a very fast method of defining load areas, simply select the members in which you wish to define the envelop of the extrusion. Followed by defining the vector corresponding to the length you wish to apply to the extrusion then tick the Create load area option and hit Apply.

Load Area on Selection provides a fast an easy approach to modelling the end panel of the structure. Using the same elements which were used for the extrusion then toggle the Load Area on Selection menu down and click.

Defining Lateral-torsional buckling restraints on members can at times be a laborious task. This has been made much simpler with the new graphical definition methods available in AD2020. I find this shows its full potential when dealing with purlin to rafter connections. Just simply select the rafters, launch the command and then select the purlins which intersect the selected rafter. These can be quickly verified using the new display for restraints.

Another edition to aid the steel designers in Advance Design 2020 is the improvements to the Angle Verification. The tension resistance of angle bracing members is now checked with respect to their net cross-section area and the bolt hole size is calculated automatically dependant on the size of the angle selected.
