How to fix an issue with the AutoCAD Civil 3D Country Kit

Now that the UKIE AutoCAD Civil 3D Country Kit is available we’ve had a look at it and there are a couple of things that have gone slightly awry. If you can’t wait for a fix, you can sort them yourselves and be the “go to guy” in your office, winning admiration and accolades from your fellow Engineers. There might even be an open top bus parade and people will name libraries after you… OK, maybe not all that, but at least you will have UK standard Kerbs in your 2018 drawings.


Firstly, you might have an issue whereby the UK Kerbs, Channels and Edgings don’t work. When you select them and place them on an assembly, it looks like this:

Handily, the very nice people at Autodesk have provided us with all the source files so that we can easily fix these things ourselves.


In Autodesk Civil 3D 2018 go to the Insert Tab and select Import Subassemblies. In the Import Subassemblies window navigate to the source files here:
‘C:ProgramDataAutodeskC3D 2018engImported ToolsSource’.

Next, select the component you want, for example British Kerbs, and tick Import To: Tool Palette. You can choose a toolpallet; as you can see in the image, I’ve created my own. It’s up to you if you want to add them to the Catalog Library. If this is going to be shared it makes sense.

Now go to the tool pallet, and at the bottom of the list is the one you have just imported. This will work as before, and you’ll probably need to do the Kerbs, Channel and Edges too.

Whilst we are on the subject, here are a couple of other things you can do in Subassembly Composer as well:

If you try the new Detailed Carriageway and turn on Superelevation you might find that the right-hand carriageway shows a 5% slope, regardless of what you set it at. This was an issue in 2016 and is easily fixed.


Open Subassembly Composer. For those of you that have not used this before, it comes with Civil 3D and unless you deselected it during installation, you should have it. Just hit the Windows key Key on your keyboard and type ‘subas…’, and it should appear in the list before you finish the whole name.

In this software open the .pkt files from ‘C:ProgramDataAutodeskC3D 2018engImported ToolsSource’, which should look like this:


Go to the Superelevation tab in the bottom right hand side of the software and uncheck the “Show in Preview” option on the Right Outside Lane Slope row. Save the file and import the subassembly as before.


Next you might try the new Surface Water Channel, or the new Swale, or Footpath with Swale. You may notice that they only work on the left hand side of the assembly. When you put them on the right, they appear the wrong way round.


In Subassembly Composer you can fix this too; just open the pkt file as above and it will appear like this:




In the Input/Output tab, you’ll see that the side is set to “None” or “Default”. Just change that to “Left” or “Right” (it doesn’t matter which). It will give you the option to select its properties when you bring it into a Civil drawing. Again, save the file and import the subassembly as before.

Whilst you are in the Subassembly Composer, you can change any of the strange preset values, such as a 5m footpath. But it’s probably easier to do this in Civil 3D, especially if you are unfamiliar with Subassembly Composer.

toolpaletteMoving back into Civil 3D, and after tidying up your tool pallet you’re now ready to set the presets. The example here is the 0.5m Capping on the Carriageways, but you can do any of the properties in any of the assemblies. Another good one to change is the 5m footpath on the Footpath and Swale.

listRight click the Subassembly you want to change and select Properties. In the Properties window you can rename it and set any standard properties you want to be the default when you use it. Here I’ve set the Capping Course to be 0.

Other things I’ve noticed include a couple of missing images. You can also add them here in the properties. The image on the upper left side of the properties can be right clicked and an image specified. You could choose your girl/boyfriend, pet or favourite child, but I chose the ones that were on my 2017 installation. To help you find them, they are stored here:

The missing ones were the T Head and the Amorphous Corridor Head. Find these in Windows explorer, then copy and paste them into the 2018 profile folder here:

Now right click this missing image space in the properties and locate the 2018 folder to choose the images that you want.
