How To Spot Changes Easily With DWG Compare In Advance Steel

Changes to our Advance Steel models are a constant factor in life. However, it is not always easy to keep track of all the differences. Perhaps your architect has sent you a new layout to work from after you have done a fair bit of modelling, or perhaps a colleague has had to adjust your model while you were unavailable. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to spot what has changed between one version of a file and another?

A recent addition to AutoCAD is the DWG Compare function. This works well in Advance Steel 3D Models also, although it does not work on 2D Advance Steel drawings. Simply have one version of your file open, click DWG Compare on the Collaborate ribbon and select the other version of your file on disk. AutoCAD will overlay the two models or drawings and highlight the changes for you.

Click the little gear wheel on the tiny toolbar to see a key for the colour coding. In the image above it is easy to see that the two red beams in the mezzanine floor have moved. You can zoom and rotate freely in this mode. The arrows on the toolbar will step through each change zooming in to it.

As you can see in the image beams that have changes such as holes moving will count as new beams and deleted beams, so you still need to interpret what is being shown a little.

Once finished click the tick on the toolbar and you will go back to normal mode.

I think this is a great way to home in on the changes happening to your models.
