{"id":16873,"date":"2020-06-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/graitec-group.com\/asti\/?p=16873"},"modified":"2023-07-06T15:36:21","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T19:36:21","slug":"aec-game-changers-digital-twins-with-christopher-riddell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graitec.com\/us\/blog\/aec-game-changers-digital-twins-with-christopher-riddell\/","title":{"rendered":"AEC Game Changers: Digital Twins with Christopher Riddell"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<figure><iframe src=\"\/\/play.vidyard.com\/49XwrYVa39K94sUuybigqt.html?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of \u201cdigital twins\u201d grew out of the aerospace industry, explained Christopher Riddell, Director of Innovation at Applied Software and the game changer of the week in the June 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/info.asti.com\/the-aec-game-changers-virtual-event-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AEC Game Changers<\/a> virtual event. \u201cNASA used something called pairing technology\u2026 which was a precursor to digital twins,\u201d he said. \u201cIn effect, they needed to find ways where they could work and not be physically near the object, because they were up in space. A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical asset\u2026 it\u2019s been used to perform simulation and what-if analysis.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since we are very much in a data-driven world these days, we are learning that data needs to be treated as an asset. \u201cWithout that data and the understanding of it,\u201d Christopher said, \u201cwe can\u2019t apply technology to it.\u201d Digital twins are able to capture real-time data in order to create predictive simulations and conduct analyses. In practice, few building owners are receiving an as-built digital twin of the project model at commissioning because the exceedingly high level of detail required in the model is beyond the traditional scope of work for architects.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the use of digital twins could become the \u201cbackbone\u201d of the construction industry. As Christopher put it, during construction \u201cthey tell you about what we\u2019re building, whether we\u2019re behind schedule, or the kinds of risks we face.\u201d After construction, they tell you every detail that went into constructing the building. \u201cThere are two different ideologies about where we stand in the industry,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have one side saying we don\u2019t have enough data\u2026 and the other saying it\u2019s the backbone for how we make decisions.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where a digital twin can be most successful is in its ability to track data across a project\u2019s entire lifecycle. In doing this, its value increases exponentially as an asset to any building project.
